The 2005 MotoGP season has gotten even more incredible for Valentino Rossi and Yamaha. That’s because on June 26, Rossi became the first Yamaha rider in history to win five consecutive premier-class roadraces. Sunday’s forceful performance at Assen, Netherlands, also reinforced The Doctor’s – and Yamaha’s – command of the world’s most prestigious motorcycle racing series. To make things even better, Gauloises Yamaha teammate Colin Edwards finished third for the second time this season. Sandwiched in between the pair was Marco Melandri. Rossi started from the pole but couldn’t capitalize on it and completed the first lap in fifth place. But he methodically worked his way forward and took the lead at the midway point, answering a late-race charge from Melandri by posting the quickest race lap on his final circuit. Rossi later commented, “When you look at the company I’m in with former Yamaha World Champions Agostini, Lawson, Roberts, Rainey…It’s great! Rossi’s drive to the front helped inspire Edwards as well. Thrilled with the setup on his YZR-M1, the “Texas Tornado” carved his way forward from sixth, determined to make a run on Melandri at the finish. Only concerns about front tire grip made him decide to settle for third. "It was a good race,” Edwards said. “We made a breakthrough with the bike set-up this week and it just felt really good.”
