Defending AMA GNCC ATV Champion Bill Ballance surged to a huge points lead by winning on the ski slopes and in the woods around “The Wisp,” a popular McHenry, Maryland, resort on Saturday, June 25. Ballance got the holeshot and raced with championship rival Chris Borich until both got stuck on a gnarly hillclimb. Ballance recovered quickest and fought his way back to the front, where he engaged in a terrific dice with William Yokley and Matt Smiley. Ballance seized his chance on the last lap, passing his rivals on another hillclimb and never looking back. The course was as rocky as it was innovative. “It was a rock garden all the way around,” Ballance said. “It’s rough and beats the machines up, so you have to get on your toes, make the right decisions, and try to not to get hung up.” Ballance has now won five races and holds a 59-point lead over Chris Borich, who unfortunately crashed, breaking his collarbone. Although Borich will likely heal by the next race on September 10, the big points lead is a comfort to Ballance as the season begins winding down. “I feel really good,” he admitted. “This lets me come back and ride really smart.”
