Am Pro Yamaha YZ250-mounted Barry Hawk, Jr., thrilled his local fans by winning the AMA Grand National Cross Country race at the Deep Creek Mountain Resort in McHenry, Maryland, on Sunday, June 26. Josh McLevy finished second while Jason Raines grabbed third aboard another YZ250. With his well-earned win, Hawk gains on series leader Juha Salminen, who ran out of gas and ultimately finished seventh. Hawk owes his success to riding smart and nearly error-free. He started in fifth place, quickly worked his way up to third, and then took over second position by the end of the first lap, chasing leader Mike Lafferty. But McLevy nabbed the lead before Hawk and Lafferty pitted for gas at the end of lap three, so Hawk turned up the pace. He first passed Lafferty, then McLevy when he fell on lap four. Hawk credits his YZ250 with a great performance. “I like the new YZ as a whole package,” he said. “We have the suspension working really good, and I am very happy with it.” “The Am Pro Yamaha team has worked hard to overcome some setup issues and injuries this year,” added Mike Guerra, Yamaha’s Racing Department Manager. “We were pumped for Barry to get a win and for Jason to get on the podium.”
