It was so hot and humid at the AMA Prostar drag race on Sunday, July 17 at Norwalk Raceway Park, in Norwalk, Ohio, you could have cut the air with a knife. You could also have cut the tension with a knife as Patrick Racing’s Rick McWaters and Jeremy English lined up for the final on their identical Star Warriors. In a mirror image of the season, only a flash of green light and nine scant seconds would decide the winner. McWaters and English leapt off the line together at the green, their reaction times nearly identical as the twin Star Warriors lunged down the quarter mile. English quickly grabbed and then held a half-wheel advantage as they powered through the gears. But McWaters nosed ahead at nearly 140 mph and sped across the line with an ET of 9.32 seconds at 142.24 mph to English’s 9.39 seconds at 141.94 mph – and the weekend’s most exciting finish. With just three events to go in the 2005 Hot Rod Cruiser championship, the competition is intense as McWaters draws closer to earning this year’s title. Nevertheless, says team owner Nigel Patrick, “The harmony within the team is amazing. Each guy is working on the other guy’s bike. It’s really a pleasure to work with these guys.”
