Round 7 of the 2005 Superbike World Championship was lucky indeed for Noriyuki Haga aboard his Yamaha YZF-R1, as he broke away and won the second race at Brno in the Czech Republic. The spectacular win on Sunday, July 17, at the series’ newest venue was Haga’s first of the year, and Yamaha’s first since it returned to World Superbike competition this season. The company’s last win was in 2000 at Assen, with Haga at the controls of a YZF-R7. Haga’s “lucky sevens” actually began when he finished seventh in the first race of the day. But the real action started in race two as the Yamaha Motor Italia rider immediately clawed his way forward from midfield on the grid. Riding aggressively with an excellent race setup, he took the lead from Troy Corser on lap seven, then kept his head down to build a secure three-second margin by the finish. Following the 29-year-old Japanese rider onto the podium were Corser and Chris Vermeulen. Norick Abe, of Yamaha Motor France, finished fourth aboard another YZF-R1. To make the day even better, Haga also set the quickest race lap aboard his R1. He now lies solidly in sixth place in the championship as the highest-placed Yamaha rider. "I am very happy for this win,” he said after the race. Good job, “Nori!”
