The Patrick Racing Star Motorcycles Warrior team moved closer to capturing the 2005 AMA Prostar National Championship on August 14 in Indianapolis. For the sixth race in a row this year, the Hot Rod Cruiser final was a showdown between Rick McWaters and Jeremy English. Intermittent rain delayed the race until late Sunday, but the pair and their identical Star Warriors were ready. Steely eyed, the riders chose different staging strategies: Veteran McWaters staged deep to fractionally shorten the strip, while rookie English staged shallow to gain a running start. At the green McWaters was first away with a quick .102-second reaction time, but English countered by posting quicker times at 60 and 330 feet. In a mirror of the entire season, the victory looked up for grabs until English suddenly lost drive, leaving McWaters to grab the win with a 9.39- second/142.37-mph run. It was his fifth of the season, drawing him very close to clinching the 2005 championship. But English gained a moral victory as well – during eliminations, his 1.36-second 60-foot time was the quickest the team has run all season. And in his first year in the Hot Rod Cruiser class he’s still in a solid second in points.
