Led by a charging Barry Hawk, YZ250s claimed three of the top four positions in the AMA National Hare Scrambles in Tremont, Penn. on August 14. Hawk earned his second consecutive win the hard way. “The race didn’t start out too good,” he admitted after the grueling 2 1/2-hour contest. “I crashed going into second turn, and from that point on I knew I had my work cut out for me.” The conditions were hot, dusty and rocky as Hawk resumed the race in last place. But his determination was raging, and by the end of the first 14-mile lap he had scrambled all the way up to fourth place. Hawk caught and passed Nathan Kanney for third on lap two, intent on chasing down Josh McLevy and Mike Lafferty. Shortly into the fourth and final lap, though, McLevy crashed and Lafferty stopped to check on him. Hawk flew into the lead, unaware of the situation. At the finish he was surprised to learn he’d won. “I kind of lucked out,” he said, “but that’s racing.” Lafferty was runner-up with YZ250 pilots Kanney and Justin Williamson third and fourth, respectively. Notably absent was series leader Jason Raines, who broke his left leg on August 10 while practicing. Get well soon Jason!
