Yamaha-mounted Kevin Johnson stormed to his first two career AMA Arenacross victories in Baltimore, Maryland on January 13-14. On Friday the Team Faith rider pulled the holeshot and commanded the entire 20-lap main event in First Mariner Arena. Energized and confident, on Saturday he then engaged in a four-way battle with Brock Sellards, Jim Neece and fellow YZ250 rider Chad Johnson during the closing laps of the main event before passing Sellards and Neece for the win. If you wanted to prove that the AMA National Arenacross Series formula works, you wouldn’t have to look any further than Saturday’s main event. By all accounts the racing was the season’s most exciting, with the big crowd on its feet and cheering as the battle raged. Series leader Chad Johnson had been suffering from the flu for two weeks but somehow found the strength to claim a fifth on Friday and a fourth on Saturday after getting a tire puncture late in the race. Thus he actually left Baltimore with an even bigger lead over Sellards, who lost points after stalling his bike during Friday night’s race. Meanwhile, Kevin Johnson’s two wins helped him gain points in the championship run. Chad Johnson leads the series with six wins, Sellards holds second with four wins, and Johnson lies in third with two wins.
