When Eagle River, Wisconsin bills itself as the snowmobile capital of the world, the city really means it. That’s because for 43 years the USSA Eagle River Championship has been held here on a half-mile oval specially made for snowmobile racing. And over the January 13-15 weekend, Yamaha Apex snowmobiles impressed with a pair of wins and high finishes. The weekend began on Friday night with fireworks, a stunning back flip demonstration by Jimmy Blaze Fejes on his modified Nytro Freestyle, and a special race of champions with six former world-champion drivers, all aboard identical Nytros. Wisconsin’s Bobby Donahue won that exciting contest. In open racing, Pierce Racing’s Todd Krikke drove his Yamaha Apex to victory in its Pro Stock class against some very tough two-stroke competition. It was his first win at the storied Eagle River facility. It’s only fitting that Pierce Racing’s Chad Gueco, from Eagle River, Alaska, would win Sunday’s Semi Pro race in Eagle River, Wisconsin. That’s exactly what happened in a rough-and-tumble race. On lap six of the 10-lap final, Gueco, driving the high line in third place on his Apex, was contacted by another rider, resulting in a spill for the competitor – and a restart of the race. When the green flag waved, Gueco used his high line again and grabbed the lead – and the win. Adding to Yamaha’s trophy haul on Sunday were Todd Krikke (Pierce Racing) and Joel Diamond (MDR) who placed second and third, respectively, in their Pro Stock final.
