Talk about tough sledding! Only seven drivers finished the prestigious USCC Galaxie 100 in Barnesville, Minn. on January 28, and an Apex driven by Corey Davidson was at the head of the pack. What’s more, Davidson grabbed the win in this premier 105-mile cross-country event in only his third race weekend on the four-stroke Yamaha. He then polished his performance by driving the Apex to a win in the Veteran 35+ class and a fourth in Pro Open. Adding to Yamaha’s trophy haul, Brad Gebeke and Dean Joas ruled the Masters 45+ class on their Apexes, while Gebeke took a third in Veteran 35+. “It was so rough it was unreal,” Davidson said of the 10-mile course after the race. Slushy from warm conditions, it wound through swamps, ditches and alongside the Minnesota woods. At the Le Mans start (drivers run to their sleds and go), Davidson put his Apex into the lead before giving way to Bryan Dyrdahl after two laps. But the long race took its toll, knocking out most of the field – including Dyrdahl, who broke a skid frame and then ran out of gas. “I just rode nice, hard and consistent and tried to stay out of trouble and take care of the sled, and it paid off,” Davidson added. Afterwards the longtime two-stroke rider was thoroughly convinced of his Apex’s performance. “I like everything about it,” he said. “That motor is incredible!”
