Yamaha’s Factory Race Team was back in solid form at Anaheim III, with Chad Reed capturing a strong second in the main event and Heath Voss returning to action after a month-long injury layoff. Reed’s strong performance left no doubt that he’s a 2006 AMA Supercross championship contender as he pulled into second in the points standings ahead of James Stewart, who crashed three times at the Feb. 4 event. The evening started Blue and White as YZ450F-mounted Reed and Voss grabbed holeshots in their heat races and rode well to transfer directly to the main event, which would prove treacherous. As the pack charged into turn one, Stewart fell directly ahead of Reed, who managed to avoid the melee and then quickly jump into third when Kyle Lewis and Ernesto Fonseca fell in the sand section. From there the suspense built as Reed raced to catch Ivan Tedesco and leader Ricky Carmichael, and as Stewart suffered more crashes, including one with Jeremy McGrath. Reed eventually commanded second behind Carmichael, and Stewart finished eighth. With this solid Anaheim performance in hand, Reed quickly set his sights on next weekend’s San Diego round, which he has won the last three years. “I have had very good success in San Diego,” he said. “It’s where we got our first win last year and turned the season around – I’m looking forward to going there.”
