Kevin Johnson put his third win of the 2006 AMA National Arenacross Series into the record books in Memphis, Tenn. on Friday night, Feb. 3. Riding his fast Team Faith YZ250, the victory helped boost Johnson’s points total to 325. He currently sits in third place behind Junior Jackson Yamaha-mounted Chad Johnson and Brock Sellards, who share the series lead with 375 points apiece. Chad Johnson came into the race weekend at Memphis’ FedEx Forum with a seven-point lead over Sellards, but with a third place as his best finish for the weekend – compared to a pair of second places for Sellards – he’s really going to have to perform as the final battle unfolds next weekend in Denver, Colo. But so will Kevin Johnson, who is followed in the standings by Jeff Northrop with 306 points. And in the cut-and-thrust Arenacross environment, every rider knows the slightest bobble can cost precious points in the final round. Still you couldn’t ask for better season than to have the top two riders heading into the last race tied in points and wins. But that’s exactly what’s coming to the Denver Coliseum next Friday and Saturday. With great racing and a little luck, Yamaha is well positioned to claim two of the top three positions in the series.
