After championship rival Ricky Carmichael failed to finish and James Stewart ended up 17th, the determined Reed put his YZ450F ahead in the standings with a nine-point lead over Carmichael. “I was glad to get back on top of the box,” he said afterwards. “This victory is long overdue, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.” Although Reed has finished on the podium in almost every race this year, he hadn’t really been on the leaders’ pace until Saturday night. The race began with Carmichael falling in the first turn, damaging his bike. Jacob Saylor then grabbed the holeshot but soon gave way to Tedesco, Reed and Stewart. On lap 11 the Yamaha rider got by Tedesco for the lead, running the quickest laps of the night and looking strong and confident. In pursuit of Reed, Stewart ran off course, crashed and stalled his engine. “We have nine races left in the season,” said Yamaha team manager Jim Perry later. “Last year, once Chad won in San Diego it really turned his season around. Now that he’s won in St. Louis, he’ll be ready to do battle in the rest of the races.” In the inaugural Lites East Supercross series event, Team Yamaha of Troy rider Branden Jesseman scored a strong third place finish that landed him and his YZ250F on the podium. The next round takes place next weekend in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta next weekend.
