The 2006 AMA Prostar drag-racing season has begun just like last season ended – with Star Motorcycles on the victory stand. At the opening round at South Georgia Motorsports Park, defending champion Rick McWaters took the Hot Rod Cruiser win after setting a new speed record of 150.05 mph in qualifying – nearly 5 mph over the old record. He beat teammate Jeremy English to the lights in the final with a 9.198-sec., 149.20-mph blast. McWaters gave the competition notice that Patrick Racing would be hard to beat when he set the speed record on Saturday, March 4. But AMA rules require all record runs to be closely backed up during the same meet. So the pressure was on as McWaters and English squared off for the Sunday-evening final. When the greens flashed English launched fractionally quicker to take the lead. But he raced his Star Warrior engine into the rev limiter before shifting, and in that split second McWaters surged ahead. “We were neck and neck all the way down,” McWaters explained later. “Then I heard Jeremy tag the limiter and I knew I was out in front.” The winning weekend was a great reward for Patrick Racing’s hard work over the winter. “It’s certainly great to start the season off with a win and a record,” team owner Nigel Patrick said. “We’ve thrown down the gauntlet to the competition again and are confident our packaging is up to the job.”
