After a crazy week in the AMA Supercross Series, Yamaha’s Chad Reed maintains a narrow one-point lead in the championship, 191 to 190 over Ricky Carmichael. Reed finished third to Carmichael and James Stewart in Indianapolis on March 4, but not before the AMA retracted its 25-point penalty against Carmichael for using illegal fuel in San Diego. The combination of events took 30 points out of Reed’s lead. Race night in the RCA Dome began well with Reed winning his heat on his YZ450F and teammate Heath Voss winning his Semi race. As the gate dropped for the main event, Ernesto Fonseca grabbed the holeshot and led the first laps before Carmichael got past. Reed, mired in sixth, took nearly half the race to get clear and go after Carmichael and Stewart, who had moved up to second after a first-turn crash. After his long injury layoff, Voss finished 14th and is expected to complete the rest of the season. In Supercross Lites, YZ250F-mounted Brandon Jesseman fell in the first turn of the main event but worked his way back to finish seventh. Martin Davalos, aboard another YZ250F, won his heat race, but also crashed in the main and finished 20th. “After the past couple of weeks we’re looking forward to going to Daytona, where we’ve have good success the last couple of years,” said Team Manager Jim Perry.
