Camel Yamaha Team rider Colin Edwards earned a prestigious award on March 5 by setting quickest time in a special timed session at Spain’s Catalunya Circuit aboard his YZR-M1. His prize for the 40-minute session was a brand-new BMW Z4 Roadster. The test was dampened by rainy conditions that caused some riders to slide off the track, but Edwards found his Yamaha’s setup favorable and rode a series of laps that no other rider could approach. His best time of 1 min., 57.102 sec. was nearly two seconds under Nicky Hayden, the next quickest rider. Edwards’ teammate and defending MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi ended up third quickest, with James Ellison fourth on a Tech 3 Yamaha YZR-M1. In all fairness, Rossi had topped the charts during the previous two days before the rain set in and was fastest in the wet before falling. Still, Edwards was delighted with proving best in the slick conditions. “In the end the times came quite comfortably and we were able to keep chipping away throughout the session, just getting faster and faster,” he said. ”This is a confidence boost for me but I have been saying since the last couple of tests that we are in good shape and this proves it.” An estimated 35,000 fans watched the testing at Catalunya.
After some additional scheduled tests, the 2006 MotoGP season is scheduled to begin on March 26 in Jerez, Spain.
