Before the contract ink was dry, newly signed Yamaha rider Traci Cecco won the opening round of the 13-race Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) ATV championship in De Leon Springs, Fla. with her new YFZ450. She not only won the women’s class by more than a minute, but posted the quickest overall time of all riders in the over two-hour event. Traci’s determination and speed over the last several seasons is what drew Yamaha to support her for 2006. “It’s great to see a woman get out and perform as well as Traci did on her YFZ450,” said Yamaha ATV Public Relations Manager Steve Nessl afterwards. “It goes to show that this is not just a man’s sport and that women can get out there and not only have fun but go fast too. She is tough as nails and trains as hard if not harder than the majority of the men.” Defending champ Ballance encountered a steering problem on his YFZ450 early in the afternoon pro race. Amazingly, he quickly detoured to the pits for repairs, then returned to his exit point on the track, rejoined the race and ran some of the day’s quickest laps to claw his way up to ninth. His brother Brandon finished on the podium in third aboard another YFZ450.
