Just as he has been doing all season, Joel Diamond placed his Apex snowmobile in the Midwest International Racing Association (MIRA) winner’s circle on March 4 at the Lincoln, Mich. half-mile oval. In fact, he got to the podium three times in a row on Saturday. Diamond charged to first place in the 30-lap Pro-Am Stock Enduro by lapping almost the entire field, and also took a second in the Pro-Stock sprint race and a third in Open-Mod – all on the same Yamaha sled. So effective was Diamond that race officials finally asked him to tear down his Apex after the races. “We’ve been fast and people have been asking questions so they finally tore us down,” he explained. “At least I finally got to see the inside of the motor. Aside from changing clutches and having a spark plug out a couple of weeks ago we’ve never touched it.” On Sunday, Diamond teamed with Corey Davidson in the Michigan Cat 500 aboard another, modified Apex. A loose battery wire cost them 15 laps in the pits and a crash by Davidson cost another few. At day’s end Diamond had lapped the half-mile track some 375 times to bring the Apex back up to sixth – a great achievement considering the setbacks. Just ahead of the pair, George Wilson of Loshaw Racing took a strong fifth on a his Yamaha four stroke. Congratulations all!
