Yamaha road racers enjoyed a truly fantastic weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Aug. 5-6. In a virtual repeat of the recent MotoGP weekend at Laguna Seca, Eric Bostrom won the AMA Formula Xtreme class while Jamie Hacking took both Superstock and Supersport events. The wins significantly boost Yamaha’s chances of earning championships in all three classes. Formula Xtreme Factory Yamaha Team’s Jason DiSalvo dominated Formula Xtreme qualifying on Friday, but it was Eric Bostrom who claimed Saturday’s race, leading all 16 laps to reach the checkers ahead of title rival Josh Hayes and DiSalvo. Bostrom’s 14th Formula Xtreme victory sets a new AMA record in the class. It also ties him with Hayes for second in points and brings him to within four points of series leader DiSalvo, setting up an incredible three-rider championship battle.Aboard his modified Yamaha YZF-R6, Bostrom commanded the race from the first turn, where he made a daring outside pass on DiSalvo and Hayes. From there he built up a comfortable lead while DiSalvo and Hayes battled for second. They took their fight literally to the checkered flag, where DiSalvo missed second spot by a slender 0.049 sec. Superstock Jamie Hacking craftily won the 16-lap Superstock race aboard his Graves Motorsports YZF-R1 as teammate Eric Bostrom put another R1 into second and Jason DiSalvo brought a third R1 home in sixth. Hacking’s third consecutive Superstock win further pads his series lead to 27 points over Aaron Yates. Hacking dominated Saturday’s Superstock qualifying as well as the Sunday-morning warm-up. He also quickly established a lead in the race, but lost it as the event was red flagged for a first-lap crash by Steve Rapp. After the restart it was Bostrom who took control, with Aaron Yates and Hacking in pursuit. Rather than attack immediately though, Hacking bided his time until late in the race as Bostrom repeatedly fended off Yates. Hacking eventually passed both Yates and Bostrom to claim his first-ever Mid-Ohio win. Supersport Shortly after winning the Superstock race, Jamie Hacking switched to a YZF-R6, then went out and won the 16-lap Supersport event. The win was Hacking’s fifth consecutive in Supersport and cemented an amazing third straight Superstock/Supersport double victory, after also “doubling” at Miller Motorsports Park and Laguna Seca. He now has a secure 59-point lead over Roger Lee Hayden in the Supersport championship. Hacking circulated between third and fourth for the first five laps, then took charge after the race was red flagged on lap five. He soon passed Roger Lee Hayden for second and then stalked and passed Michael Barnes for the lead on lap 10. Meanwhile teenage sensation Josh Herrin, who had qualified mid-pack on another R6, vaulted his way into eighth on lap one, fell back to 16th in the early running, and then steadily worked his way back up to finish 10th. Way to go guys!
