The new 800cc MotoGP formula is looking good for Yamaha as Valentino Rossi and teammate Colin Edwards finished first and third, respectively, at the second race of the season in Jerez, Spain on Sunday, Mar. 25. It was the 46th fourstroke MotoGP victory for Rossi, and the likeable Italian also broke the track record and opened up a nine-point lead over Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner in the process. Meanwhile, Edwards’ superb podium finish vaulted him to fourth in the standings. Rossi and Edwards qualified well in second and fourth places, and when the 27- lap race started Edwards quickly passed Carlos Checa for third, while Rossi decisively took the lead from Pedrosa. The Fiat Yamaha YZR-M1 rider then led every lap in front of a record 138,000 fans, ultimately beating Pedrosa by just 1.2 seconds with Edwards only 1.4 seconds further back. “Today my Yamaha really flew and I was able to do a great race,” Rossi said afterwards. “It feels like a long time since I last won and this is a great emotion and a very special victory for me, especially in Jerez in front of this great crowd.” “Towards the end I could see (Toni) Elias had appeared behind me and I didn't like the idea of him getting spurred on by his home fans and trying to snatch a podium, so I really had to keep hammering away!” Edwards added. “The last few laps were a little hairy at times as I started to slide but anyway we managed to make it and it feels great to be up here on the podium again."
