Chad Reed got tantalizingly close to beating AMA Supercross points leader James Stewart outright at the 13th round of the series in Irving, Tex. on Saturday night, March 31. Just 0.855 seconds, to be exact – that’s all the L&M Racing YZ450F rider was behind at the finish. Underscoring Reed’s determination to beat his rival, he also set the quickest race lap on the last lap. With just three rounds left to go, Reed now trails Stewart by 35 points in the standings. Reed easily won his heat race over Andrew Short and Yamaha Factory Racing’s Grant Langston. But when the gate dropped for the main event it was Short who grabbed the holeshot, followed by Stewart and Reed. Both quickly passed Short and ran a close 1-2 for the rest of the 20-lap event. Unfortunately though, Langston was pushed off the track in the first turn, crashed and restarted at the back of the pack, then fell again later and ultimately finished 14th. “After Grant made improvements in the last couple of weeks it was disappointing for him to crash in the first corner and then struggle through the main event,” said Team Manager Jim Perry. “But Chad rode great – in fact it was probably one of his better rides. He was right there the whole time even though it was rutty and muddy, and that usually isn’t Chad’s forte. When you put all those things together that makes it that much better.” In the Lites East division, aboard his Yamaha of Troy YZ250F, points leader Ryan Morais saw his championship lead over Ben Townley slip to just three points as he finished fourth while Townley pulled out a win. Now only Morais, Townley or Darcy Lange can take the title as the Lites East series heads to the final round in Detroit on April 21. Go Ryan!
