The all-new Yamaha YZF-R1 got its first World Superbike victory in Race 2 at Donington Park, England on Sunday, April 1 with Noriyuki Haga at the controls. It was also a dramatic one as Haga took the lead from Max Biaggi in the very last corner of the hotly contested 23-lap event. Haga’s win, reinforced by Troy Corser’s close third-place finish, pulls the Yamaha Motor Italia teammates nearer the top of the standings as points leader James Toseland dropped out of the race with bike trouble. Corser and Haga actually started the day by finishing Race 1 in second and fourth, respectively, as Toseland won and Biaggi scored a third. When Race 2 started the same four riders commanded the field, with Toseland quickly taking the lead over Haga and Corser advancing from eighth to third. Once Toseland was sidelined on lap four, Haga, Corser and Biaggi all took turns up front. Biaggi controlled the last third of the race until the final lap, when Haga turned up the heat and then slipped through for the win as Biaggi ran wide in the last turn. “I am very happy with my win and the race overall,” Haga said afterwards. “With my number being 41, and after getting fourth place in the first race, I had to get first place!” Although Toseland still leads the standings, Corser, Haga and Biaggi have all moved significantly closer. “To come out with two podium finishes is good, and I am pleased that Nori won the second race for the team and Yamaha,” Corser added. “Nori and I have worked closely together, sharing set-up information. But now I know that he can beat me on these settings I am going to have to be more secretive!”
