A wet and wild World Superbike event in Silverstone, England on Sunday, May 27 ended solidly for the Yamaha Motor Italia team with Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser claiming second and third places, respectively, in Race 1 – and organizers canceling Race 2 due to treacherous conditions. Haga’s excellent finish moves the Japanese rider to within 23 points of James Toseland in the championship while Corser’s remarkable 110th career podium helps him maintains fifth place in the standings behind race winner Troy Bayliss. Haga was blisteringly fast aboard his YZF-R1 during Superpole qualifying on the 2.25-mile Silverstone circuit. He held the provisional pole until the last few minutes, when Bayliss eclipsed his time by just 0.019 sec. to take the pole with Haga second and Corser qualifying his R1 in fifth. In the wet race, Haga got off to a good start, holding second behind Bayliss. Meanwhile Corser quickly jumped to fourth, then moved past Haga into second within a lap. The Australian next charged after Bayliss, catching and passing him for the lead on lap four. But Bayliss reclaimed the lead two laps later, and Haga also eventually got around Corser to retake second place. “We got a good result today considering the weather,” said Team Coordinator Massimo Meregalli afterwards. “To have both riders on the podium together repays all the hard work the team has put in so far this season.” Haga added, “It’s a good result and I have even managed to reduce the points difference between myself and first place. I’m looking forward to Misano – at least it hardly ever rains there!”
