Sunday, June 10 was a great day for Grant Langston at the historic Southwick, Mass. sand track as the Yamaha Factory Racing YZ450F pilot raced to 3-3 moto finishes to claim his first podium for Yamaha and his first AMA Motocross podium in the premier 450 class. He also earned another distinction en route – becoming one of only a few pro riders ever to pass James Stewart in a race. Langston qualified second fastest between Ricky Carmichael and Stewart, and launched from the gate inside the top five behind Stewart, Carmichael, Tim Ferry and Mike Alessi in the first moto. He quickly got past Alessi for fourth, and then advanced into third on lap six and held the position for the duration of the grueling 30-minute race. Team Manager Jim Perry was pleased to see Langston’s progress after suffering a shoulder injury last January. “Grant took to the sand really well and his conditioning was right there,” he commented. Langston shone brighter still in the second race. After another good start he chose terrific lines in the sand, inched up on Stewart and then swept past. The YZ450F pilot raced between eventual winner Carmichael and Stewart for a couple of thrilling laps before Stewart reclaimed second. “It was a great performance for the whole team,” said Perry later. “Everybody’s been working hard and it’s starting to show. Now I hope we can keep it going throughout the season.”
