Mark Burkhart won his third straight Supermoto race and Brandon Currie put in a strong performance to claim second in Supermoto Lites at the Waterford Hills road course in rural Waterford, Mich. on Sunday, July 8. Burkhart’s victory boosts him into the Supermoto points lead for the first time, while Currie is now tied with David Pingree in Supermoto Lites as the season approaches the halfway point. The historic racetrack follows the natural terrain with challenging dips and rises, and an infield dirt section featuring berms, whoops and jumps was added just for Supermoto. In the Lites division, Currie was quick during practice on his YZ250F despite struggling in the dirt rhythm section. He grabbed the holeshot in the 12- lap Lites event and led until the same rhythm section, where Pingree snuck past after he ran wide. But Currie hung onto Pingree until making a couple more mistakes in the dirt and being forced to settle for second. He and Pingree now have two wins and two second-place finishes apiece. “I just have to work hard and beat him in the next few races,” Currie said afterwards. When the lights flashed green for the 15-lap Supermoto race, Cassidy Anderson got the holeshot with Jeff Ward and Burkhart in close pursuit. Enjoying the fast asphalt portions of the track, Burkhart pitched his YZ450F inside of Ward in fast Turn 1 on lap three, then repeated the strategy to take the lead from Anderson on lap four. From there he built up a comfortable gap and was never challenged. “We’ve been doing a lot of suspension work and the bike’s getting a lot better and a lot easier to ride,” he reported afterwards. “This weekend everything just kind of gelled together and worked great.”
